Krewe Babalu History

                    Amigos para Siempre

                                Friends Forever

Krewe Babalu was founded in 1995 by Guy Taylor. The purpose of our organization is to promote Mardi Gras festivities on Galveston Island and to promote civic and social activities within the organization and in the city of Galveston.

We are a Texas non-profit organization and on November,16, 1999 we received our certificate of incorporation and became officially known as Krewe Babalu, Inc.

We are a  member of the Galveston Chamber of Commerce.

From a very small membership with big dreams, we have  grown. Not only with much larger membership but in realizing those dreams:

Our officers have developed into the Board of Directors.

Our yearly Babalu Ball has grown from one small group to large sold out ball rooms.

Our first King Baba David Pitre and Queen Alicia "Lu" Perez were crowned in 1998. The following year we established the Krewe Babalu Royal Court with the crowning of King Baba II Jack Hans and Queen Kathy "Lu" Lawrence. The first Duchesses were Barbara Pitre, Paula Simpson, Terri Paige, Jan Nugier. The first Dukes were Jim Harrison, Mike Hollis, Thomas Laine, and James Grady. Royal Court page in development.

The Jr. Krewe Babalu was started in 1999. Prince Ricky and Princess Lucy are crowned at the pre-party for Munchkins Parade.

1999 saw our first ever float, Miss Lucy! She was beautiful and was built entirely in Galveston by Krewe Babalu members. The only float with real flushing his and her bathrooms. Quite an impression! We were in all the parades. We debuted our first Den Party.

2001 (Space and Beyond) brought us a bigger, double the size float! We now have two floats through much hard work and generosity by Krewe Members and special donations.

Our scheduled events each year include Epiphany with the crowning of the Royal Court and the official start of the Carnivale season! Den Party, Christmas Party, Halloween Party, Rock -N-Bowl...and of course Mardi Gras with all of the parades and parties including Fat Tuesday. 2001 brought the largest Fat Tuesday party ever. Held at The Brothers Petronella, we had 500 people in attendance. We opened the doors to the public and made news.

Each year is new and exciting events.

We believe in giving back to the community and since 1998 we have a chosen charity that we support through our many events and fundraisers. The Children's Center of Galveston has been our primary focus.

The millennium also saw the development of our long awaited website: www.krewebabalu.com

Babalu Babble, our newsletter, was dreamed, developed and delivered. Now starting on the website.

Our merchandising has grown up with our own Krewe Babalu logo medallions and fabulous jackets.

Keep watching for more updates and picture events as we progress!
