The purpose of our organization, Krewe Babalu, is to promote Mardi Gras festivities on Galveston Island and to promote civic and social activities within the organization and with the City of Galveston. Within this framework, Krewe Babalu wanted to give back to the community. In 1998 Krewe Babalu instituted a policy to make donations to one local charity each year.
The first year (1998) Hope Therapy was our chosen charity. Our first $500 donation was made.
In 1999 we chose to support The Galveston Children's Center and made a total contribution of $1000.
In 2000 we again chose The Galveston Children's Center and in August of that year, we donated $600 from the "Rock-N-Bowl" fundraiser co-chaired by Dave and Patricia Oswald.
Toiletry items were much needed by The Children's Center. During our 2000 Halloween party, the "Batty" Babalu Bash, the cost of admission was a toiletry item. We donated four-33 gallon bags of toiletry items through everyone's generosity! The "Batty" Babalu Bash was chaired by Kathy Lawrence.
During 2001 we have already donated $600 from our "Raffles for Charity". This went to The Child Development Center, another division of The Children's Center. Our raffles are held at each meeting with raffle tickets selling for $1.00. The raffle prizes are donated by individual members and have included everything from a free ride on our float during the Fat Tuesday parade to a spiral lighted Christmas tree!
Much needed shelving has also been built and delivered to The Child Development Center by Krewe Babalu members. The funds were made possible by our TV Raffle held on May 1, 2001. Members sold raffle tickets for a 31" TV with a profit of $711.00. All proceeds benefit The Child Development Center.
We are proud of this yearly tradition and watching it grow each year! Checkout the 2007 dotaion Picture!
